I like to make films about flying adventures, and the X-Lakes is a highlight of the year! I enjoy sharing my knowledge and connecting with pilots on Fly With Greg. I've been an instructor since 1994 but I'm still learning from the sky.

I Left school in 1980 joined the Royal Marine Commandos, followed by a long carrier in Crime Scene Investigation. I am currently a guest speaker on CSI courses at Hull University. Hi my name is John, I am now 40 years old and live on the Isle of Wight. Father of two children and married to a very understanding wife. I learnt to fly in 1996 and shortly after hang gliders but later gave up hang gliding as I realised that paragliding was so much more accessible and I felt that it gave me a lot more feeling in flight. I'm very passionate about flying and I really excited recently to get into hike and fly Adventures. I have never done the X- Lakes before so I'm very excited about getting in this year.

I love the hike and fly, vol-biv adventure side of this sport. It's a real pleasure being able to carry your wing and your tent on your back and see where the day and the weather takes you. I've been flying for nearly 5 years now and taken part in a number of hike and fly competitions and the Lake District always provides the most amazing backdrop for any adventure.

I'm 37 year old Lancashire lad and I've been flying for about 15 years having first learned with Active Edge, then learning some more as a member of Thames Valley and Pennine. I've ticked off a few of the flying meccas abroad and have tried some friendly comps like the BCC, Buttermere Bash and Gin Wide Open. Along the same timeframe I was a rower, did an Ironman tri, a few charity cycling expeditions, and spent as much time as possible hiking or running in the lakes, peaks and dales. Jack of all trades master of none but I've always wanted to do the X-Lakes ever since I first heard about it. It seems the perfect combination of adventure, fun, flying and fitness, with a bit of stunning familiar scenery thrown in.

Jok Dougan

Jok Dougan would struggle to find thermals in a Millets discount bin and believes that fine flare technique belongs to disco attire. His strategic approach to the X-Lakes is convincing tourists to carry his kit from one launch site to another. As the TVHGC events and comps committee member he never fails to succeed in winning anything of note but the club likes him for his should do but really can't do attitude. This is his second X-Lakes event, proof that he never learns.

With experience in skydiving and nearly 1000 jumps, I then got into competitive hill running around the hills in central Scotland. Put the two together and you get Hike and Fly! A good day for me is just running in the hills, but a superb day is running and then flying!

John learnt to fly so he didn’t have to walk downhill. His first inquiry about paragliding was “Can this get me back to my car” His favourite method of going uphill, without assistance, is by using all fours. Should be better at XC than he is.

Enjoy long runs in the mountains and flying cross country so thought it’s about time I combined them and take part in my first hike and fly competition. Always worth a weekend of suffering for a beer and craic on a Sunday night.

Hike and fly paragliding is a new area of exploration to me, especially in a racing style. But with hill experience and fitness from other areas of life, hopefully I'm in a position to give it a good go. Ultra keen! I've flown mostly in Derbyshire but have now moved back to my home stomping ground of the Lake District. With 60h in two years, plenty of thermalling, a range of sites and landscapes, and an unhealthy obsession with GH and met I feel I've caught the bug ;).

Looking forward to a new challenge for my flying (and fitness) with my first hike and fly adventure. I’m a keen pilot, mountain biker, skier and a not-so-keen runner. I’m looking forward to getting out there, challenging myself, learning from others and having fun while I’m doing it. Canadian born, Brighton based.

I live on the Isle of Wight where the hills are only 200m high. I learnt to Hill Paraglide in 2004, cross trained to include Tow, Power and Tandem, at 300 hours gained Development Pilot rating, and since 2013 have mostly flown in XC competitions abroad. With Covid restrictions I assembled a lightweight kit this Winter with a view to have a go at hike and fly in the UK. I'll attempt to follow the footprints and vortices of the more experienced H and F pilots.

Swiss "Kolibri“ pilot in both senses of the word, coming from the Canton of Berne, like a well-known “Eagle”… British weather – wind and rain? I’m curious to see if it will end-up as an ultra-trail for me. But one sure thing: bivouac is mandatory!

A pilot for almost four years, (overly) keen comp pilot for 3.5 years and lover of walking in the fells ’since before I was born’! I was lucky enough to grow up in the Lake District and very excited to be competing in the arena I know and love the most. I’ve been unlucky with the weather in all my previous hike and flys so fingers crossed this won’t be another two day walking event!

Having been confined to inner city Manchester for the last few epochs, I'm itching to get out on the fells for an adventure. My usual technique when out hiking is to stomp around in the direction of interesting looking things, get utterly lost, then try and find my way back. So the X-Lakes format should fit that bill perfectly. And hopefully I'll get to do some of it in the air.

Went out for my first training hike last night with another competitor. 11km on the South Downs (tiny hills!) with a 15kg pack. Last half was in darkness with headtorch and most of the time it was raining - strangely loved every second!! Have met with quite a few of the other peeps in the Southern club who are competing - we're going to all try and train together when we can, share info etc, the fun has already started!

This will be my first hike and fly race, I have been flying for about 3 years now. It’s likely that I will be using full fat paragliding gear so I’m hoping it will be more flying than hiking. The first and last time we flew the Lakes we were boating around at 6500 ft, I assume it’s always like that?!?
